We are Black Umfolosi International

BUI is a Canadian-based Imbube or A cappella ensemble known for its captivating performances of traditional harmonious songs intertwined with indigenous dances from Southern African culture. Originally established as Black Umfolosi in Zimbabwe on March 15, 1982, the group was reformed on August 15, 2023. With a rich history spanning over four decades, BUI’s melodic rhythms blend seamlessly into synchronous harmonies that are certain to uplift your spirits. The ensemble has garnered international acclaim, having graced stages in more than 30 countries worldwide, some multiple times, carrying on the legacy of its predecessor.

Performing predominantly in the Ndebele and Zulu languages, BUI’s songs feature the intricate and captivating sounds of tongue clicking and rolling, leaving audiences enchanted and eager to mimic these sounds, sparking curiosity. Their dances embody strength, endurance, pride, and gratitude intrinsic to Southern African culture, showcasing these elements with joy, grace, and precision to mesmerize onlookers.

MISSION STATEMENT AND OBJECTIVES

BUI’s mission is to promote, preserve, and showcase Southern African traditional music and dance while fostering relationships with international, contemporary, and traditional performing arts groups. This mission is underpinned by six core objectives:

  • Creating employment opportunities for members
  • Addressing social, economic, cultural, and topical issues through the arts
  • Promoting social harmony, inclusivity, and understanding among individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Supporting the community through education and raising awareness of pertinent issues
  • Assisting the underprivileged and mentoring youth to develop their talents through the arts

Providing a sanctuary for individuals to find solace and peace, offering an escape from daily routines to rejuvenate the mind and spirit.
